Oliver + S Sun Hat

Hello? Anyone under there?

Oops! I did it again!

I made a sun hat far too big for baby to wear.

OK, haha, just kidding. This one isn't for the little one. It's for his bigger brother. And I have to tell you, it fits just right, and I love love love it. Love it!

Maybe it's the fabrics. Or the cute design. But I just adore it. It's a good thing, too, because I shelled out $17 for the Oliver + S book, Little Things to Sew, solely for this hat. I saw it somewhere (was it your blog? Please tell me!) and decided to give it a try after my last attempts at sun hats didn't run smoothly. (Still love my polka dot hat though, despite its imperfections.)

It's totally reversible. Isn't that rad?

I love both sides. My only worry is that they are too white and will be dirty as all get out after one trip to the park. And here is the sad part: I forgot to prewash my fabrics. Eek! I did a bunch of prewashing a couple of weeks back, and when I started cutting into this fabric, it didn't dawn on me at first that these fabrics weren't all messy like they would be if they'd gone through the wash.  So now I'm thinking I can never wash it. Which means I am going to be that mom at the park yelling over and over for her kid to hang onto his hat, for the love of God!

I worked on this in a few short shifts over four days. It comes together pretty quick, really. I loved the construction of this hat.  I don't know how to explain it other than it just seemed to make a lot of sense when I was sewing. The Oliver + S book and patterns were very detailed, so I never felt lost. Get this: I didn't have to rip a seam out once! Score! The last step of the hat involves hand-sewing the interior crown on using a blind stitch. Since I'm an impatient sewer, I was dreading this, thinking it would be a total drag to be so close to the finish line and have to tediously hand sew my last seam shut. But then I got over it, picked up a needle and thread and it was done in about 40 minutes.

I will be making more of these for sure. They'd be cute gifts, too, don't you think? I would really like to make a girly one. It's nice that the pattern is so unisex. One more time: I love it!

Luke is sleeping so the photos of him enjoying his hat will have to wait. I'll update once I've got 'em.

  8. Those fabrics are so perfect! Nice to hear your comments on the book, it's so nice to make it through a pattern without getting the "what exactly does that mean am I gonna screw this up" feeling!

  9. I just got my book and fabric for this very same project. I am hoping to get started soon... one of those, "just get over your nervousness and do it already" projects. My 2 year olds will not know if the seam is straight or not! :) Love your adorable hat!
