Update on, like, my life

Blogger is being a mean nasty old wench and won't let me add photos to a post right now. So this is what you're going to get. A picture-less update on those life issues I posted about at the beginning of the month. You've been dying for an update, right? If not, don't worry, because as soon as Blogger gets its panties untwisted I have a few prettier posts (read: with photos) planned on some recent thrifty finds, the start of my embroidery class, a newly finished pleated clutch and an entry in the Gussy Sews inspiration workshop. Lots of good coming!

But for now, words, no photos. Words about a few issues I mentioned in this post. At the start of this month, we began more earnestly toilet training Luke, we moved Jack out of our bedroom, and I stated I was going to pump and workout more.

The toilet training isn't going too badly, actually! I don't know what your approach is, but ours for the last six months had been to talk about going on the potty probably way too much and sporadically put the kid on the potty. Surprise, surprise, but that really wasn't getting us anywhere. So now we are just putting him in underpants in the morning. It is a bit of a struggle some days, but for the most part, he agrees to wearing them for a while. And he's even initiating trips to the bathroom, for both pee and poop! It's always very exciting. We reward with a few chocolate chips. But he has little accidents, too, which is fine. Normal, right? And he refuses to wear the undies when we leave the house or basically from naptime on. I don't want to push him too much. So I'm trying to figure out the next step. Open to your ideas!

As for Jack (my four-and-a-half-month-old), he is out of our room and into his! And sleeping... OK. The good news is he hasn't woken up at 1 or 2 the last few nights. But the bad news is that he is often waking up around 10 or 11 after being put down at 9. I suppose there are worse things. I'd rather deal with that than get out of bed at 1. I was a bit bleary-eyed at the beginning when I was dealing with those early night wake-ups, but feeling better now.

On the other two fronts, progress is minimal. I am pumping maybe every other day. And working out even less. I don't know why I am so unmotivated to workout. It's not like me. But I did manage a 2.5 mile run on Monday. And we have deemed 10 a.m. "family workout hour," a time in which one of us each day gets to workout. The idea is to motivate and support each other. By thinking you have a set appointment, and knowing the other person will watch the kids without question, it should help us both get some sweat time in, right? We'll see how that goes -- Jimmy already skipped his first workout yesterday. That doesn't help. But I will be wearing a bathing suit quite a bit the first week of July, so I'm hoping that kicks my motivation up a notch. If not, maybe I need to make a mandate -- no blog reading or sewing until I've worked out. Lord knows, that would do the trick!

OK, thanks for indulging my little life update. If you are facing any of these same issues, please, let's chitty-chat in the comments! I'd love to compare notes about what is working (or not) for you.

  1. How old is Luke? My son, Sawyer is only 18 months, and we are wondering when to start potty training or at least starting to introduce him to the idea.

I am with you on the working out. It is so hard to get motivated, especially when there are so many other things to do - like embroidery :)

I haven't even done anything for the embroidery class yet. I have been following along and thinking about it... that counts, right? I have a gift I am finishing up, then I get to start making something for me. Yay!

  2. I have twin boys who just turned 2. I have been thinking about starting PTing them since we have our little girl on the way, due in October. I was pretty good at starting off, but never got any positive results, so after about 2 weeks I have stopped trying. I need to get back on that!! Good luck with your son! I can use all the tips you have!

  3. Luke is one month shy of 3. We started a little bit early last winter. We didn't want to push it too much then since I was having Jack in early Feb. (turned out to be Jan. 31). They say they regress, and I knew I would be too caught up in the baby to be consistent with potty training. So mostly, we just introduced the potty, helped him use it if he was willing and left it at that. I used this article as a guide to tell when Luke was ready for the potty. Allison, they say boys take longer than girls, so I'd wait a bit! I think it is better to wait until you are sure the child is ready than push them before that. I am no expert though, that's for sure!

  5. It's the 5:30 thing that is the prob.. Jack eats then almost everyday. I guess he could do a bottle, but then I have to rope Jimmy into helping, and that would not go over well. I'd love to try it if it was at like 8 a.m.!

  6. We've been having tons of issues with Izzy and the potty. She so wants to use it, but is not ready physically. With Phin, we tried and tried, but failed. So we quit for a while and he came to us when he was ready and then potty trained in one weekend. If he's ready, it will happen and I think what you are doing now is getting him ready so that he will understand and he'll let you know when he wants to move on.
